Sing Vs KL

It was a toss between Sing or KL, and after all the horror stories from friends:

1. "Snatch thieves everywhere in KL, they know you aren't local, you'll be a target!"

2. "Don't use your hand phone in public, why, So n So was talking on his hand phone and a motorcyclist came along and snatched it away!" I asked So n So last Sunday and he confirmed it. "I was in front of Sheraton, can you believe so brave of him, Sheraton!" Wearing a suit some more, no wonder.

3. "Don't even carry a handbag, put all your $ in your pocket!" Not carry a hangbag? What do I do with my hands? Walk like the guys with hands swinging?

4. "This perverted taxi driver talked to me about his sexual preferences all the way from the airport into town, including wishing he had a ..." What!

5. "My taxi driver took the long way to my hotel and it was midnight! I was praying and pretending to talk on my mobile so that he knows I am in touch with someone who knows where I am!"

6. "The taxi drivers choose their customers and usually avoid congested roads." Yes, I've experienced that in KL.

7. "Why go KL now when it's so uncertain, so many rallies and protests!"

8. "Go to KL to get stuck in a traffic jam?!"

..I have decided. There's no traffic, no crime, no protests and no spit in Singapore, so Hub, Ming and I are flying off this Thurs for a 6-day visit. Only thing is, the food's usually bad in Sing except in high class restaurants and I was so looking forward to KL's coffeeshop and hawker food.

But at least they still cook the best chicken rice I hear. Can anyone tell me where's best for Singapore laksa and chicken rice?

  4. Hi Terri
Agree with Summer, you need to know the right places to get it. :D I can vouch for Rui Kee and the laksa places she mentioned. There's also a baking supply shop next to Rui Kee (it's opposite to Raffles hotel). Pop by to have a look.

There is also a chicken rice chain 'Boon Tong Kee' I frequent at :

    425 River Valley Road
    Tel : 6736 3213

    Kampong Chicken Eating House
    247 Outram Road
    Tel : 62212522

    Have fun!

  5. hey,

Agree with Summer & Rei, Sin's food is not bad lah, I crave for my fishball noodles all the time so each time I go back, I have that everyday ! If you want hawker food in nice environment, go to Food Republic. I can't stand heat in coffeeshops so we go to Prima Taste for their laksa.I always but their ready paste from supermarkets back to KK to curb my cravings for laksa.....

  7. I am not Chicken Rice fan but this blogger gave good point for Yi Bao
    http://ieatishootipost.sg/2008/05/yi-bao-still-most-underated-white.html

Check his Chicken Rice category, Laksa and The really must try list. You can find something good there.

Try Wah Kee Prawn Noodle, it is voted the best, I have tried it myself =)

  8. Sigh...so sad that KL is now famous for the wrong reason. But i do agree, if i am walking on the street and hear motorcycle passing behind me, i would stop and stand aside with my arms ready to hit.

  11. Hi Terri, my first post in your blog (though I have been secretly reading your blog for very long). Being a Malaysian in Singapore for more than 8 years, there's lots of stuff that I missed in Malaysia, and having said that, there are things that I will definitely missed if l ever leave Singapore. Those things that I will miss (also, suggesting to you :P) are as follow:

    1 - Bak Kwa
Bee Cheng Hiang or Lim Chee Guan bak kwa IMHO is the best that I have tasted. Juicy, succulent, tasty...ermmmm. [Bee Cheng Hiang & Lim Chee Guan-Chinatown]

    2 - Chillie/Butter Crab
The crabs here are huge! The claw is as big as,say, your palm! (Not that I knew how big your palm is, but l reckon it should be somewhere there). The fried mantou is terrific with the sauce. [JUMBO seafood restaurant/ Seafood Paradise restaurant]

    3 - Chicken rice
Succulent chicken laid on a bed of bean sprouts, fragrant rice, & nice garlic-chilli sauce. I usually go for the "white" chickens, which to me is the X-factor that gave chicken rice the "ommph!".

4 - Ayam Penyet (Ikan penyet)
This is actually an Indonesian chicken rice (Not too sure whether they serve this in KK, probably they do w so many I/I in KK). The chicken is deep fried and smashed, thus the name "penyet", and served on a wooden plate accompanied with fresh greens plus a hot chillie sauce (sambal)and rice. [Far East Plaza-Ayam Penyet]

    5 - Beancurd
Tao Huey! Smooth and silken beancurd smoothered with gula melted melaka served with chinese fritters (Yu Tiao). [Rochor Road]

6 - Japanese food in general
Dollar to dollar, Singapore has one of the best quality japanese food around. You may want to try Sushi Tei for a start. If you are still unsatisfied and wanted to embark on a perfect japanese food galore, you may want to check the japanese restaurant in The Ritz Carlton out. The last l heard, they are the top 3 jap restaurant in the world (outside of Japan).

    7 - Buffet
I know you don't like buffet, but I am a total sucker for buffets in Singapore. I like the spread of food and the variety that goes with it. The Olive Tree (In Bugis) is definitely one of those that I would love to visit again for their high quality buffet spread.

    8 - Steamboat
All sorts of steamboats are available in Singapore- Korean, Japanese,Chinese, Mongolian, etc. On of the places you might want to check is along Bugis' Liang Seah street. Plenty of steamboat congregate there. :)

Well, those are some of the stuffs l can share with you in return for what I have gotten from your great blog. It will be great if I could meet up with your family, together with my wife on one of the day while you are here. Can do some chatting and sharing.

p/s-I realised your youngest son (Wey) is not joining you?

  13. The prawn noodle post's photos was gone, but here is how the prawn noodle looks like. $10 with 1 bowl of prawn noodle, 1 bowl of thick soup with 3 giant prawns.

  14. Speaking of prawn noodles, there is one terrific makan place at Macpherson that sells a considerably good prawn noodle. Small prawn noodle at S$4, big prawn noodle at S$5, and big prawn+pork ribs at S$5.

The stall opposite sells some ngor hiang, which my colleague always give us a treat with.

  17. sad but true that crime rate has gone up in kl.

prices of food, petrol, and cost of living in general are sky rocketing while the pay rate remains low.

the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. unfortunately the poor outnumber the rich by a lot too.

  18. I'm in Singapore a lot as you know, in fact I'm there (here?) right now! I look forward to your review of these places! So far my favorite place here is Sushi Tei. I must say I'm quite fond of all the hawker style food places, such as Kopi Tiam, which are airconditioned. Even the open air ones are pretty good. I like the one at Tiong Bahru market. That place is famous for the shark meat noodle, tho I didn't know it at the time so I haven't tried it! My gf's place is right opposite it though so I'll have to make a point of trying it.
