Yatala Pies

P1180751

The guy didn't understand me at first and then he said "Oh, Yat-lah pies!" We were on the way to the Gold Coast and this was the second time we tried searching for Yatala Pies, recommended by CL, who, like Yi, is not even a pie-lover.

Once you get there (you must ask directions, because the roundabout that leads there branches off into 6 directions, plus if you are coming from Brisbane, you have to cross the highway), you know you won't be disappointed. Lots of cars in the big lot, and people sitting inside and out chomping on big pies slathered with tomato ketchup. (Off-track a little: I discovered all my 3 kids hate tomato ketchup, unlike me. I don't know if it's because years ago we saw this guy give a whole bottle of ketchup to his toddler at the airport KFC and she happily sucked on it. Yes, feed your babies ketchup, guys, and they'll grow big and tall and who cares if others have to eat her drool.) The pies weren't expensive so I went crazy as usual and ordered too much : steak n kidney (my favorite; so english), steak n mushrooms (very good), plain steak, beef bacon n cheese (the boys' favorite but I found it very salty), steak tomato n onion (very yum), chicken (good flavor but hardly any chicken in it), apple n custard (Wey said okay) n berry pies (very good but not much berries).

The pies are baked in old-fashioned ovens. The whole place felt like it was in the 50s.

The family serving pie at A$10/RM30 is a better deal than the individual pies at A$3.80 to A$4/RM12. The pies were very solid; weighed like a kilo each and as big as a US Big Mac and one will fill any stomach to the brim. While the fillings were very tasty and wet, I kinda was wary of the size and the puff pastry - there was so much of it (pastry).Still, pretty good pies.

With a menu like that...i will have a hard time deciding what i want. 1kg each!?!? Can finish ar?

denise: i also used 'ketchup' 4 times.. 'wet' bc the filling had lots of gravy, which was "VERY" (8 times now) good, as vs moist bc tt would be dry for a pie.

ppea: the pies were heavy but not 1kg each lah, "weighed like" 1 kg...hmm, i think cos they had lots of gravy inside. i'm used to dry/frozen pies but now tt i've eaten wet ones (can't think of anuther way to describe them), i won't have them any other way :) i ate a bit of this n tt, so maybe i did eat equivalent of a whole pie. tt explains my thighs.

it's huge to those who don't used to have pie for dinner or lunch like me. the fun thing is the name. it's pronounced 'yat - ala' instead of 'ya-ta-la'. it happened to me when i said it to my OZ colleagues. nobody knows what kind of pie is.

MY SISTER INLAW HAD A YATALA (STEAK & KIDNEY PIE AFTER HEARING HOW GOOD THEY WERE! sHE DESCRIBED THEM TO ME AS I WOULDN'T FEED IT TO MY DOG IT WAS SLOPPY AND IT GAVE HER DIAHORREA. BUT I STILL LOVE THEM ESPECIALLY THE FAMILY STEAK PIES, IN FACT THEY ARE BETTER COLD THAN HOT & IF YOU PUT THEM IN BETWEEN FRESH BREAD & BUTTER THERE IS NOTHING BETTER REGARDS K.B.

Be Warned, they do not accept eftpos or credit card.

I used to put up with having to get out of car & withdraw money from the cashcard machine inside in order to pay, but today was the last time I am willing to do it. Whilst I blame the banks banks for the $2.00 fee I just got slugged, there is a reality check here for Yatala Pie's Management.

My last cash pay was back in the 1980's -not my preference to receive bank pay but I am stuck with it. Come on Yatala pies it's a new century & I am not willing to cop a $2.00 surcharge to buy your pies when I do not have sufficient cash in my wallet.

I guess its a five minute drive to Dad's pies or back to the local bakery for us from here on.

Yes they're good but not as good as they used to be. When they used to be viewable from the highway they had the best pies EVER, they've kind of gone down hill since.

terri@adailyobsession said...

anon: oh no. what a shame :(

sarah: disappointed to hear tt. i think they've gone so big the quality has dropped.no more 'home-made' goodness.

The pies are as good as ever & the selection excellent

They used to be the best around but are now close to the worst. Try a Big Dads pie instead, far superior and nice big chunks of real meat, not this runny slop you now get in Yatala pies.

The one and only time I tried Yat-la pies was in 2008 and was greatly disappointed. The pastry was not thoroughly baked and soggy on the inner side so I'll give it a 5/10. So many people say it's good so maybe I had a bad pie, won't know unless I try it again when I next pass by.
