Cont., No 5: Street Food
Stinky tofu is a Cantonese food. I'm probably the only Cantonese in HK who wouldn't eat this. Even my super food-careful mom loves stinky tofu. I tried a teeny nibble in Shanghai 2 years ago and it was the worst smelling thing ever! Even before it's cooked, it already stinks like blocked sewage. Here's how Wey reacted in a Shanghai market 2 years ago; he wasn't staging it. This was just 2 years ago! How kids grow! Wey's now taller than me, and has lost quite a bit of fat.
After a piece each, both Jungjung and Hub lamented that they don't make stinky tofu stinky enough anymore...
Some kind of scotch century eggs. I should've tried this. I'm looking at the picture and wishing I did.
Stewed snails (without shells), served in brown paper-cones. I saw girls lining up for this. Jungjung said this was very yummy and I was going to get some but after taking this photo, my attention was diverted to other food and I totally forgot about the snails.
The orangey cuttlefish tentacles was my fave street food on my first visit to HK when I was 12. They used to snip the tentacles on the spot and you can hear the sound and follow it...I should've tried the orangey pig intestine (I think) in front; looks crunchy.
Looking at this photo now, I am amazed that I actually ate this. It looks like rectums, or what I imagine rectums to look like. Oh dear.
But you've got to try everything (but no snake and exotic meat for me) once right? And you know what?? We loved it! It was very heong/fragrant (indescribable), chewy, greasy and the mustard just made it one of the yummiest snacks we ate that day. However, not everyone will like it so be warned. The three of us were chewing and nodding our heads with approval.
One night when we were near our hotel, we saw this stall selling ngo chap/mixed cow innards. This is another famous HK street food. We had to try although it looked unappetising.
OMgoodness, this was SO delicious!!! HK$8/RM3.60/US$1.10 per stick. Hub and I fought for the last piece. I won.

ReplyDeleteee what is that long snakey sausage ??
when i went to HK in march this year, my SIL brought me to KoonTong to try the famous "giong zap zhong lai" a kind of hot milk with ginger juice ... you should try that... it requires a skillful technique to let the ginger juice 'zhong' (bang into) hot milk, the milk will set like soft toufufar... very tasty and helps to release air from tummy... but do be careful after drinking, got to control the exit of gas to avoid embarrassment... :)
ReplyDeletechow-toufu turns me off, i almost suffocated when i passed by a stall, i can't even take durians...

ReplyDeletehi Terri, bloghopped from onabentofrenzy. My, that smelly taufu. Reminds me of that time when I visit my Kau Fu who resides there and I told him I wanted to try one. He insist I wouldn't like it and I insist I would like to try. Turn out, I got chicken feet right in front of the stall. So , no, didn't try it.
ReplyDeleteLove all the photos. Thanks for sharing so we may feast our eyes on the food !! haha.
allthingspurple: i'm so honored to have a 251 yr-old reader with two beautiful girls:D
ReplyDeleteyes, i can't understand how ppl can eat rotten tofu salvaged by deep-frying. then again, cheese is rotten/fermented milk, blacan is rotten shrimps..
You are really brave. No matter how glutton i am, i will only feast my eyes and dare not try. But now am convinced, no matter what, am going to sapu all street food when i visit HK again! *New Motto*
