Off to Shanghai

When you read this, I'll be in Shanghai. It is a sudden decision for Hub and I to visit our daughter. She doesn't know, and I've timed the publishing of this post so that when you read it, the coast is clear.

We plan to arrive at her home, then walk around the area. I can imagine the noise, the smell, the busyness, the little lanes and things and sights that are so interesting and foreign yet familiar to me. We plan to start sending photos to her mobile using a China number around 6 pm, when she should be knocking off work but usually doesn't. We 'll first post maybe a steaming basket of xiao long bao, followed by another photo of us at Waitan (The Bund) or maybe at Xintiandi. The final photo will be taken outside her office. I can imagine her bounding out screaming and crying. I can imagine hugging her and smelling her hair. Hub will have that contented smile on his face.

As I was about to purchase my Royal Brunei ticket, I was alerted by AirAsia's offer to Osaka. I've always wanted to be in Japan for the cherry blossoms. The sakura will have to wait. This spring I'm smelling my daughter's hair.

  5. I hv access to the net, unlimited, hooray!

Heather: awww....but our plan failed bc 1/2 hour b4 arriving at yi's office. (we had to acede to the relatives's insistence on eating dinner first), my blog post was published n yi's friend C had already told her tt we were coming. Lol. Plenty of tears but so joyful.

Dang, it is SO cold. It's 3 pm n i am sitting undr two comforters wth the portable heater blowing 1 ft away right at my fingers. It hurts bc it's so hot but inside i can feel the icy cold. Shanghai cold is no joke, esp if you live in an old unheated hse! The cold will drop to -1 C this weekend...i can't wait to go home to the heat!

So many places i want visit, n near yi's office is a fabric market where i can get a dress made in a day but i, me, can u blieve it, prefer to stay in bed! I am just not a cold weather person!

  10. Dear Terri,
I saw you a week ago and now you are in SH. Bet you n huby were so excited to see Yi. Its always nice to give surprises and I think I wouldnt know how to react if I got one.
I also couldnt stand the cold when I was in Tokyo. Even at 15 degrees, I am all wrapped up! 1degree..? My goodness, you are a tough lady. I want to share a tip with you...not sure if you already know it. From my experience, I found out that if you want to keep warm, wrap a woolen shawl, scarf or muffler around your neck and cover your shoulders with it and keep it even when you are indoor. If your neck is warm, your whole body feels warm. When you go out, wear a glove and also something to cover your ears.
If you find that its still cold when you are just sitting down doing nothing, its better to move around, doing something..like cooking? I know, I know, who want to spend the precious time cooking when you can spend it with Yi and eating out.
I think concrete apartment or condos are warmer in winter compare to houses. Have a good time anyway and take care. See you again soon.
    Tina U.

  14. I think that this is great, even if it couldn't totally play out the way you planned it. It must warm Yi up most wonderfully in this horrible winter cold. The winter in SH is indeed quite horrible at times, the locals kept telling me it's worse than in the north because it's a humid cold that gets to your bones.

And you've arrived at a good time what with Restaurant week and Book Week. Do write more about this family reunion and post pictures! Would love to see SH thru the eyes of those who have close family in and links to the city.
